Re: Marcus Browne
He's doing alot more in League 1 than Martinez did and he had a brief spell in the first team last year.

If he keeps performing he deserves a chance. Dont think he has had the same opportunity that Diangana has.

Rice is vastly overrated. The only reason he's getting game time is because we fucked up in the transfer market once again this summer. Plus his loyalty is questionable.

wow, just wow.

Vexed is still sore because he said on here in pre-season that anyone who thought Rice could play in midfield was a fucking tit, or words to that effect.

Diangana, on the other hand, has had some good moments but in general has looked out of his depth. I will be surprised if he makes it but happy to be proved wrong. Holland looks the better prospect.

It's a narrative that suggests clubs are infallible with their decision making. The loaned players are always judged perfectly to not be needed, while those kept were done so for reasons to be judged with hindsight. I think the reality is much more chaotic.

I doubt anybody knew that Diangana was destined to be in the first-team reckoning in August - if so, they kept it as a massive secret. Had a team made a loan offer for Diangana I'd bet it would have been taken. I think I'm right that Haksabanovic, Holland and Browne were being picked ahead of him at youth level. None were available when Diangana did get his chance with the senior team. Of course its conjecture but I think it's likely that Diangana got his break because of the luck of others being injured or away from the club. And actually it's a really good sign for us if so, because it means that others stand a chance of doing just as well if not better from the same ranks.

Re: Marcus Browne
Alex,

The argument that some players are just unlucky to be out on loan when an opportunity comes was memorably made in recent memory regarding how a certain Ashley Fletcher was ahead of Marcus Rashford in the Man Utd reckoning but just happened to be at Barnsley when they needed a striker...

I reckon in most cases clubs have a pretty good idea who is staying around because they have a chance, who is going out on loan with a view to keeping a very close eye on them and potentially integrating them when they come back, and who is simply marking time until they can be moved on permanently. Of course they don't always get it right, but how many of our 'talked about' youth prospects of the last decade or so have been let go and proved us wrong? Stanislas is the only one I can think of who has managed to make a career as a Premier League player.

hahahhahahahahaa!

Rice has been one of our best performers this season, he's excelled in that DMC role.

Re: Marcus Browne
I would rate Rice as one of the most standout talents we have seen rise through the ranks of our academy. Diagana in my opinion is more of a slow burner as he is playing in a more flair position.Marcus Browne is a talent but there is a slight negative when it comes to attitude, again as someone noted earlier he needs that proverbial arm around him . The main talents that could make the leap from Academy to first team are,Connor Coventry,Josh Pask,Holland,Silva and maybe Dan Kemp.

Overrated?

You wouldn't recognise a good football player if Zinedine Zidane knocked on your door and said I'm Zinedine Zidane I was a very good footballer

Re: Marcus Browne
It's so hard for these players to make the grade now. Why would a PL club risk giving them playing them, to learn their trade, with relegation so costly?

That's why only the very best talents - such as Rice - make it now.

Look at someone like Steve Potts who came up through youth and made captain. Would he make it in today's game straight from youth?

Not so sure.

Re: Marcus Browne
Thats not true. You can break through if you perform well whilst out on loan which not many of ours seem to do.

Alex V 4:42 Wed Nov 28
Re: Marcus Browne
I think a bunch of young attackers at the club are looking at Diangana and thinking 'that could have been me'. Or even 'that should have been me'. Haksabanovic, Samuelsen, Holland etc. You need a bit of good fortune with the timing and to catch the manager's eye at the right time. It's another negative of loans - you simply can't break through for us if you're not at the club.

Was told pretty much the same thing by an ex pro MATE who’s seen him 2-3 times this season

Re: Marcus Browne
I live close to Oxford and a mate is a former player of and ST holder. Admittedly this was over a month ago but I asked him about MB. He said that he wasn't particularly impressed with him and felt it very unlikely that he could hack it in the Prem. Championship at best were his thoughts.

Re: Marcus Browne
I see you have made my point admirably. We haven't sold anyone because we havent had anyone bar Payet that was a good young player to sell. This season though we do have players other teams want, Rice, Diop and Arnautovic. Hands up who thinks they stay when the bids come in.

Ideally they'll all get a chance if they continue as they are.

Re: Marcus Browne
Boleyn8420

You say that and I would be tempted to agree but when you think about it, when was the last time we were desperate to keep hold of a good young player and a bigger club came in and nicked him off us?

It's not really happened a big deal since the golden generation of Ferdinand, Lampard, Cole, Carrick, Defoe and Johnson. You could argue Tevez maybe but we were lucky we even got a season out of a player of his stature and was only with us to put him in the shop window anyway.

Apart from that though, I don't think there have been that many.

Sir Alf 2:19 Wed Nov 28
Re: Marcus Browne
Deserves to get his chance ahead of Silva and Holland really although the loan system will probably prevent that.

Playing in League 1 is a darn sight more demanding than the U23s?
